I’ve been selling on eBay full time since 2011. I’ve learned a trick or two along the way. When I first decided to become a seller on eBay, I realized that stepping into the world of online sales requires a bit of preparation. After all I raised bugs for the past 20 years, what did I know about selling on eBay. Absolutely nothing! I was hardly on a computer at the time. I was a complete newbie in every aspect. Through trial and error I was able to build a nice side hustle for me and my family, it that’s continued since 2011! I guess I’m doing something right.
I’ve put together a list of mistakes I made when I first started selling on eBay and what I see new sellers are in the bad habit of doing. Some of these are costly and might even get them kicked of eBay for good. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made so I’m sharing those right here with you now.

One mistake I see sellers doing is that, I notice they often forget to add some personal information in their profile. This is important for newbies, you are sharing with your potential buyers that you are a person, not a corporation and you’re a small family owned business. This is essential for new sellers to share this information, because your new to eBay and you won’t have many, if any reviews.
You want to make sure your profile was complete—providing a professional picture and a sharing a little bit about yourself and that you’re a small family owned business, this instills trust in potential buyers.
Research What To Sell Before You Start
You will want to do a little bit of research so you can understand the market trends and the demand for various products. It helped me to pinpoint a niche which was both of interest to me and financially viable.
Let’s say you’re selling stuff you got from your favorite aunt, and most of what you have is beanie babies. I would check to see what they are selling for on eBay right now. Because times change and what used to sell years ago, when your aunt bought those toys are not worth anything now.
So I would just keep the valuable ones and donate the rest. Same goes for most old pressed glassware. Nobody wants that stuff now. Many things that sold back when I started, you can’t give it away now. The market is just not there anymore.
Doing a little bit of research right from the beginning can prevent a lot of heartache for you. You might even decide you don’t even want to waste your time selling on eBay if the items you have to sell are not as valuable as you once thought they were.
Do that research now, and save yourself from listing things that won’t ever sell.
My husband and I love antiques and vintage items. So it was a no brainer for us to sell in the collectibles category. But we also sell various home decor items. Vintage kitchen gadgets are my favorite to find at thrift shops and when were out at yard sales.

And even if you see other sellers selling what can not be sold. Don’t be tempted to follow their example. Because it could land you in a ton of hot water.
Sellers Are Not Making Sales Because Of These Listing Mistakes
Over the years I’ve seen so many listing mistakes sellers make, and it’s costing them sales. When I create my listings on eBay, I focus on clear, accurate titles and descriptions, and I make sure to include high-quality images that showcase my items beautifully.
Not Crafting Effective Titles
My titles are concise yet descriptive. I do my research first for the item, and use some keywords that I find from sold listings to help me craft the perfect title.
I want to ensure that my titles accurately reflect what I’m selling. At the same time I want to help buyers find what they are searching for when they are looking for something specific to purchase. I want them to find my item.
Many sellers with just use three or four words for their title. That’s a big mistake, we want to fill up that title space completely. Making it much easier for a potential buyer to find our things on eBay. We want to sell our item and the more words we can fit into that title the better.
Here’s what you should included in your title.
- Keywords: I include relevant keywords at the beginning of my titles.
- Clarity: My titles precisely indicate what the item is.
- Brand and Model: If applicable, I always incorporate the brand and model.
- Condition: I specify whether the item is new, used, etc.
Not Writing Compelling Descriptions
In the descriptions section, my focus is on providing all the details a buyer needs in a well-organized manner. My goal is to answer any questions a buyer might have. Trust me you do not want to dig out a shirt you listed months ago, because you forgot to include the measurements.
Here’s what you should include in your descriptions.
- Bullet Points: I break down features and benefits into bullet points for easy reading.
- Specifics: I include specific dimensions, materials, and any unique features.
- Condition Details: I thoroughly describe the item’s condition, mentioning any flaws to avoid future issues.
- Example: “This vintage teapot is in excellent condition, with only a tiny chip on the lid noted in the photos.”
Not Using High-Quality Images
Photos are arguably the most crucial aspect of my listings. High-quality images from multiple angles give buyers confidence in what they’re purchasing. For example, try and take your clothes outside for a picture and hand it on a fence or clothes line for the picture. This will make your pictures “Pop”, when people are scrolling.
- Lighting: I take photos in well-lit conditions to show the item clearly. Outside pictures are awesome!
- Multiple Angles: I showcase the item from various angles, including any defects.
- Staging: I stage the item against a neutral background to make it stand out.
- Resolution: I ensure photos are high-resolution to allow for zooming in without losing clarity.
Above all else, fuzzy pictures do not sell. Our goal is to make our item look so awesome that people will want to buy it regardless of the price. My items sell over many others with lower prices because I’ve crafted an awesome picture of that item.
Not Adding Best Offer To Listings
I’ve noticed that when I add make offer to my listing and even my items that I auction. I will sell more. Ebay is known for negotiations. It’s fun to see if someone will take a little less for an item. So I always add Best Offer to all my listings. Let the hacking begin!
A little secret to adding Best Offers to your items. Is that if someone does make an offer, your shop will grow in eBay’s aggerithem. The more offers and sales, the higher up the search results your shop will go. So that’s another reason to add to add that to your listings.
Not Setting the Right Price
To set a competitive price, I examine completed listings for similar items. This gives me a sense of the price point customers are willing to pay.
I factor in the condition of my item, its rarity, and market demand to find a sweet spot. For instance, if I’m selling a used smartphone, I’ll look at recent sales of the same model in similar condition to guide my pricing.
Not Understanding eBay’s Pricing Options
Auction-style listings: This allows me to set a low starting price to entice bidders. I’ve learned that an attractive starting price can encourage more bids and possibly result in a higher final sale price. I run every item I sell on eBay in an auction for 7 days first. This gets more eyes on my item. So rather than having one day that my item is on the top of the search results. Mine is more active for the 7 days it’s on auction.
Buy It Now: On the other hand, the Buy It Now option lets me set a fixed price for immediate purchase. This works well for items where I know the exact value and want to sell quickly.
Many people now a days, skip the auction. But they are truly missing out. I’ve had items I’ve put on auction for the price I wanted, only to have it bid up at the last minute, because several people want that same thing. This is perfect for vintage one of a kind items, that’s why I do it.
Example: I had a doll I posted in an auction. I had $24.99 on it. When the auction ended I sold that doll for over $200! I had no idea it was a rare doll. And I would have never known if I had just put it as a buy it now.
Best Offers: I also have the possibility to accept Best Offers on my fixed-price listings. Adding the Best Offer option can increase the chance of a sale, as buyers enjoy the opportunity to negotiate.
Not Adding The Correct Shipping Cost To Listings
When selling on eBay, I always pay special attention to shipping prices for the size of box or package, ensuring accurate shipping costs and secure packaging, as these factors directly impact both my profits and customer satisfaction.
Using Calculating Shipping Costs: You can select Calculated Shipping in your listing, but I find that is flawed some what, especially if you don’t have an accurate weight added to the listing. I will only use this feature if I have a large oversized and heavy item that I’m shipping.
I do use eBay’s shipping calculator tool say when I’m combining several items to a seller. This helps me tremendously. To insure I’m not over charging the customer for shipping fees.
I enter the package details—weight, dimensions, and destination—and it provides me with the correct postage rates. Here’s a simple breakdown I use to remember:
- Weight & Size: I weigh and measure my packages after they’re sealed to avoid surprises.
- Shipping Service: I select a service that balances cost with delivery speed.
Not Packaging Products Properly
In my experience, the key to avoiding damage during transit lies in proper packaging.
My rule of thumb, is that I want my packages to survive a fall off a postal workers truck when it’s going 50 miles an hour down a bumpy dirt road!
I follow these steps:
- Choose the Right Size Box: Too big, and the item may slide around; too small, and it might burst during shipping.
- Cushioning: I use bubble wrap or packing peanuts for fragile items, ensuring they can’t move inside the box. I now use butcher paper, which you can get pretty cheap along with bubble wrap. I’m not fond of packing peanuts unless they are biodegradable.
For added security, I always seal the package with strong tape and double-check the label to prevent any delivery mishaps.

Shipping items internationally can be a great way to expand my market, but it requires extra consideration. The options I consider include:
- eBay’s Global Shipping Program (GSP): Simplifies international shipping, especially for newer sellers.
- Shipping Directly: Though more complex, it can sometimes be more economical. I’m meticulous about checking shipping restrictions and customs fees for each country.
I ship all my items through eBay’s Global Shipping Program, it’s much quicker for me, it provides more secure tracking and it’s insured with eBay. If something goes wrong, eBay will take care of it. Yay!
Not Providing A Good Customer Service
I have to say that all of my businesses has a good Customer Service. It’s the foundation of your business. So if a customer used the wrong address, or your item get’s lost in the mail. Offer a refund after a week! But tell them right away, that you will make everything right for them. This insures you customer will rest easy while they wait for their package to arrive and you’ll have a customer for life.
