Homemade Hummingbird Nectar Recipe - Homesteading for women

Don’t you just love to see hummingbirds buzzing around the house in the summer? I know I do!

I love to see them in my flower garden. They move so fast and rest on my clothesline. It’s like little fairies buzzing around. I like to add these Insect hotels as well.

And I always have my hummingbird feeders set up and ready for them to arrive in the spring each year. The only bummer can be the cost of the hummingbird nectar you buy from the store is really expensive, especially if you attract a lot of them.

I make my own hummingbird food now.

I’ve bought many kinds of hummingbird food in the past, from powder to liquid. I didn’t realize the red dye can cause them harm. So if you do buy any, check the label for red dye. You don’t want that in your hummingbird food.

I thought I would share with you my recipe so you can make my own., keep reading to get my homemade hummingbird nectar recipe for both the cooler and warmer months.

When Should You Put Out The Hummingbird Feeder?

The feeder should be filled up and placed outside around the middle to end of April if you live in and around Indiana. I like to hang mine from a plant holder stake. I use this one.

Is Homemade Hummingbird Food Safe?

I wasn’t sure, so I did some research.

Yes! It’s safe, and you don’t have to buy the store-bought. They get enough of the things they need from the bugs they eat.

How To Make Hummingbird Nectar

Supplies:
Hummingbird Feeder ~(I Love this one!)
Sugar
Water
Sauce Pan

Hummingbird Food Ingredients:

Cooler Months
1 cup granulated sugar
3 cups of water

Warmer Months
1 cup of granulated sugar
5 cups of water

Instructions:

1. Bring water to boil.
2. Add sugar and stir until it’s completely dissolved.
3. Set aside and let cool completely before you add this to your feeder. Store the extra Hummingbird nectar in a jar with a lid in the refrigerator.

Be sure to really clean the feeder with soap and water before filling it up again. Any tiny mold or bacteria can really make the hummingbirds sick. I like to wash them out with a thin bottle brush with soap and water. Just be sure you get out all the soap.

I also keep an eye on the feeder in the summer months, sometimes refilling it twice a day. Depending on how many hummers I have buzzing around. You might need to buy more than one. Those guys are really territorial and will chase off the hummingbirds.
